Jesus Quiets the Sea
12 miles x 6 miles 200ft deep larger in Jesus' day than today
Lake titled after the local villages (Tiberias, Chinitoth)
Going across the Lake was a serious committment by the disciples especially after a long day of ministry, working in 2 6 men crews they rowed into the lake
Hypostatic Union - God becoming a man who was fully both, He got tired
Jesus would have been exhausted following a season of heavy ministry, walking, climbing mountains to get solitude (6,000 ft high Mt. Hermon)
Asks his disciples to head across the lake so Jesus could get a day off
The experienced fishermen realized that this storm is potentially catastrophic
They are tired from the ministry too
Storm comes, no fires to gain orientation, and no stars
They don't want to wake the exhausted Jesus(so tired that he sleeps through a horendious storm) but the storm had turned them around so many times that they were disoriented and unable to escape to the shore
They wake the man who needed the sleep, but they all will die unless action is taken
Jesus gets up rebukes the wind and perhaps then goes back to sleep
This reveals that Jesus is Creator, the Word that God the Father sent out
They marveled asking just who he really is, he is not just the good teacher, but has power over the very weather
Jesus asks where is your faith
The wind had heard this voice at creation, so it responded to His voice
God Ruling over Creation: Psalm 65:7 106:7-9 107:23-29, 89:9 "You rule the raging of the sea, when its waves rise you still them"
